BIGinsight: How Consumers Protect Their Privacy, By the Numbers

In today’s world, data privacy is becoming more of a hot button issue. After Facebook’s massive Cambridge Analytica scandal last year, people are more aware of just how vulnerable their data is. And with that awareness comes a new understanding of how companies like Facebook track and sell their user data. Undoubtedly, in response to the prevalence of the issue, some serious data privacy legislation has begun to pick up steam. Of course the United States doesn’t yet have anything as comprehensive as The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), but California is on the cusp of passing their California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). This legislation imposes strict penalties for failure to comply with regulations, and already has many companies scrambling to update their policies and practices.

Unfortunately, the CCPA only covers the state of California, leaving the majority of the U.S. without much protection. Instead of just sitting on our hands, creating BIGtoken was our way to give power to the people. We’ve managed to create a community of privacy-minded citizens over the past year, exceeding our expectations in every way. We decided to run some numbers by polling our BIGtoken community regarding their data privacy awareness. It wasn’t surprising to learn that the majority of the 100K respondents are concerned about their online privacy. But once we drilled down into the specifics, we realized that many users aren’t taking some of the basic steps they can take to protect themselves.
